Visual Development - Main Title Design

Main Title Design

I've had the pleasure of working on many main title sequences for HBO shows over the years, and I have also had the opportunity to pitch a few myself. Here are few examples.

Game of Thrones - Season one Titles

I setup the pipeline for handling the vast and numerous kingdoms for this title sequence. Creating something that felt like a working clock or puzzle toy was the goal as well as creating layers of actions all working together to reveal the world of Westeros.

I created tools and rigging to setup the systems that would raise the buildings, telescope buildings and trees, as well as configure accurate gear and chain systems. This animation style and timing was created to mimic ancient mechanical machinery.

I setup and animated the outer homes of King's Landing as well as the rotating sigils of each location. I was also solely responsible for rigging and animation of Vaes Dothrak, Pentos, and the Eyrie.

Along with overall technical setup, I also animated the shots of bands rotating to tell the backstory of the show seen as a rotating astrolabe around a light source and the final title reveal.

True Blood - Mood Board

This is the mood board I created for the initial pitch in order to secure a spot from the show runners for a second round pitch.

Based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries novels, the inspiration for these boards was a retelling of the events in the first book via collage. By repurposing fashion and home magazines, I wanted to alter the pleasant nature of those images and twist them into a more layered, sinister, and unpredictable world.

These boards led to a full test of the title sequence.

True Blood - Main Title Pitch

Once the mood boards were approved, I had two weeks to create a motion test of how the collage look would look in motion. I wanted to walk through the story in the style of a darkroom carnival ride.

Each section of the ride would be key points from the first novel with transition doorways and "cheap" animations, building the overall nature and feel of the story viewers were about to witness.
