Visual Development - Vivo

3D Visual Development

For "Vivo", the drive was creating 3D assets that could help the directors and production designer visualize and engage in how these assets would exist in this world we were creating.
It also allowed collaboration between many different departments such as pre vis, layout, and surfacing.

Look of Picture

I created and established a look for both 3D and 2D looks as well as explored the transition and blending of the two styles. I was responsible for the overall look, lighting, camera, and compositing of this sequence. I also pitched and animated the dancing buildings sequence. The end 2D animation was a collaboration with animator James Baxter.

Chalk Dream World

Vivo is a musical fantasy comprised of multiple different worlds with multiple unique looks. For this piece, I tested and iterated on how we could represent our world as a chalk board drawing using 3D assets.

The success of this was showing how we can keep our 2D look with 3D movement.

Everglades

The Everglades was a key environment in this movie, and so extra care was taken to explore the look. The goal was to create a painterly look to the scenery without using techniques like brush strokes or 2D line work. Instead the feeling of a painting was achieved through design and lighting.

Musical Dancing Building

This was a pitch to see if we could have buildings move and sway to a beat and transform into a musical instrument. This was a concept from an older story beat but still lead to developing a style of how we would create and animate 3D elements to appear in a 2D fashon.

Keywest Plaza

The 2D design for the Keywest Plaza initially consisted of a single image that helped establish the color and shape language. From there, I expanded on the environment and designed additional parts of the city.

I built out and prototyped pieces of the environment while being flexible and fast enough to iterate, present, and pivot as the story changed.

Keywest Pirate Restaurant

Here, I created a layout for the restaurant inspired by a early piece of 2D design. I also added outdoor seating, additional props and concepts.

I had the ability to quickly redress the set for new story points or to pitch new concepts. While it was sad when the sequence that inspired this environment cut from the movie, the light touch involved in testing made sure it was executed as efficiently as possible.
